Trauma / neuro affirming

Hi, I'm Marika Cook
I'm a qualified and BACP-accredited therapist, with over 8 years of supporting adults with whatever happens to be challenging to them right now.
I don't see my role as trying to 'fix' clients. I'm here to provide a space that's just for you, so you can explore at your own pace, and gain a better understanding of yourself and move forward with more confidence.
My approach
There's deep listening on my part and a real willingness to understand you and your situation to provide focused support, and I'm told by people I'm easy to open up to, and good at putting them at ease.
Therapy with me is:
-
Collaborative and curious - no assumptions, no judgement
-
Potentially challenging at times; therapy is not always comfortable - but you will always be met with respect and understanding
-
Human - there's room for humour as well as the difficult stuff in sessions
-
Enjoyable - or so I'm told by clients!
Who I work with
I work with adult clients (18+) who self-fund, and those who come to me through their health insurance or employee assistance programme. People who resonate with my approach tend to be:
Neurodivergent, or think they might be Namely ADHDers, autistic folx, or AuDHDers who arrive after years of masking and trying to belong in a world not built for them. I'm neurodivergent myself (AuDHD), which can add an extra layer of understanding - you won't have to over-explain yourself with me.
People who've been hurt in relationships Whether in childhood or adulthood, being hurt in relationships can leave scars. Often we've had our feelings dismissed, or felt unheard and misunderstood; that won't happen here.
Clients who feel lost or experience low self esteem Feeling lost can show up in lots of ways, like finding it unthinkable to put ourselves first, being out of touch with who we are and what our wants and needs in life might be, and this can impact our self esteem. It can make life feel tough going and lonely. I provide a space for you to explore, understanding how you may have arrived at this place, and to help you find a way forward.
Clients who've experienced complex trauma My work has always been rooted with a deep interest in the impact of complex trauma; whether it's a feeling something was 'off' in childhood or adult relationships, whether there has been domestic violence, or knowing that you grew up in an environment that didn't feel safe, and are still experiencing the impact of that now. Working together, we can explore how complex trauma may be playing a part in life for you now, get to know parts of yourself that you may have had to hide to get by in the world, and if it feels right for you, somatic therapy to support you in feeling safer in yourself and more confident.
People struggling with workplace stress or burnout I've been employed in a variety of areas including manufacturing, corporate, automotive, and hospitality. This experience gives me a broad understanding of issues you might be facing, the types of colleagues you're navigating, and the stress, anxiety and low confidence this can create.
